How UIDDA domestication works in California

  1. Send us the out-of-state subpoena. We need a true copy of the subpoena issued in your state, plus the witness or records custodian's name and California address.
  2. We submit it to the Superior Court clerk in the county where the discovery is sought, using the Judicial Council application (form SUBP-030) and the matching California subpoena form, under Code of Civil Procedure § 2029.100 et seq.
  3. The clerk issues a California subpoena that incorporates the terms of your original subpoena.
  4. We serve it on the California witness or records custodian and send you a court-ready proof of service.

If you already have a California-licensed attorney on the matter, that attorney may be able to issue the California subpoena directly — we can still handle service.

Who uses this service

Out-of-state law firms, paralegals, and self-represented parties who need deposition testimony or business records from a person or company in California — especially in Kern County and the Bakersfield area.

UIDDA FAQ

Can I serve an out-of-state subpoena directly in California?

Generally no. A subpoena issued by another state's court must first be issued as a California subpoena by the Superior Court clerk in the county where the discovery is sought.

What law covers this?

California adopted the Interstate and International Depositions and Discovery Act, found at Code of Civil Procedure § 2029.100 through § 2029.900.

How long does it take?

Timing depends on the clerk's processing. Once the California subpoena is issued, standard service follows our normal turnaround, with rush available.

How much does it cost?

From $225 plus court fees, including one standard service in Kern County. Witness fees, if required, are extra.

Do you give legal advice on the subpoena?

No. We handle filing logistics and service. Questions about the scope or validity of the subpoena should go to an attorney.

Need a subpoena domesticated in California?

Send the subpoena and witness details — Brad confirms price and timing before anything is filed.
