Substituted service under CCP §415.20 allows documents to be left with a competent adult at the recipient’s home or workplace, followed by first-class mailing. It is fully valid under California law when personal service cannot be accomplished after reasonable diligence. Unlawful detainer (eviction) cases operate on tight statutory timelines measured in court days, not calendar days. Three-day notices, 30-day notices, and 60-day notices must be served in strict compliance with CCP §1161 and §1162 or the timeline resets.
